In its basic form, mead is an alcoholic beverage made from fermenting honey (diluted with water) with yeast. It is often referred to as "Honey Wine," and although the main source of fermentable sugars in mead come from the honey, fruit, spices and malt are sometimes added. Adding other things to mead changes the "type" or "classification" of mead, however, it is still mead (see the FAQ for more information). The alcohol content of mead varies and can range from very low to very high.
Mead is likely the oldest alcoholic beverage simply because it occurs easily in nature. There are references to mead in many ancient texts and throughout history many civilizations involved mead in both their religious ceremonies and everyday life.
